Data Snapshot: Intravitreal Injections for AMD or DME

The 10th annual ESCRS Clinical Trends Survey was launched at the 2024 Congress in Barcelona. This year’s survey received over 3,000 responses, building upon the success of previous editions, which have gathered input from more than 15,000 participants.

The survey asked ESCRS delegates key questions about the challenges they regularly face in clinical practice. Topics included cataract surgery, presbyopia correction, astigmatism management, ocular surface disease, glaucoma, and, as shown here, retina.

One surprising finding is that 67% of respondents perform intravitreal injections for age-related macular degeneration and diabetic macular edema. Among those who do, the average monthly volume was 64 injections. Remarkably, even 60% of those who indicated no specialization in retina reported administering intravitreal injections.

The prevalence and volume of intravitreal injections not only prompted an expansion of the retina section of the survey, but also inspired a session at the 2025 iNovation entitled “The Role of Medical Retina for Cataract Surgeons.” This session will explore how both retina and non-retina specialists contribute to medical retina care, along with the role of AI-based diagnostic tools in screening and managing retinal diseases in IOL patients. It will be co-chaired by Anat Loewenstein and Burkhard Dick, with Nicole Eter and others joining as panelists.
